Chicken Shawarma: 5 Steps to Culinary Bliss at Home

Chicken Shawarma is a popular Middle Eastern dish made with marinated chicken, wrapped in pita bread with fresh vegetables and sauces.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken thighs, boneless and skinless
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp ground paprika
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 4 pita breads
  • 1 cup lettuce, shredded
  • 1 tomato, diced
  • 1 cucumber, diced
  • 1/2 cup tahini sauce

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix olive oil, yogurt, garlic, and spices to create the marinade.
  2. Add chicken to the marinade and coat well. Marinate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  3. Preheat the grill or oven to medium-high heat.
  4. Cook the chicken for 6-8 minutes per side until fully cooked.
  5. Remove chicken from heat and let it rest for a few minutes.
  6. Slice the chicken into thin strips.
  7. Warm the pita bread on the grill for a minute.
  8. Assemble the shawarma by placing chicken, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and tahini sauce in the pita.
  9. Wrap the pita and serve immediately.

Notes

  • You can substitute chicken thighs with chicken fillets if preferred.
  • Adjust spices according to your taste.
  • Serve with pickles for extra flavor.
